The domestic abuse men suffer does not necessarily end when they leave the abusive home. The abuse may take the form of denying or obstructing the ability of the father and children to maintain a meaningful relationship. This widespread and damaging behaviour has not as yet been mentioned in Scottish domestic abuse or child abuse statistics. It is not surprising many men become, in spite of heroic and expensive efforts, alienated from their children whose distress seems to be viewed by some as just an acceptable part of the collateral damage of family breakup.

In some cases an abused man's plight may be exacerbated by professionals/practitioners who believe only women can be victims of domestic abuse. We know that it can be hard to conceptualise the nature and effects of domestic abuse and violence against men, the gender still sometimes viewed as powerful in society.
